Wireless and Power Line Adapters to DSL Product Line

AURORA, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 22, 2004--Westell Technologies, Inc., (NASDAQ:WSTL - News), a leading systems developer and manufacturer of high-speed broadband/DSL and VoIP technology access products, announced today a line of easy-to-use wired and wireless networking adapters to provide DSL subscribers additional flexibility for designing home networks.

The new line of home networking adapters include:

  • Wireless 802.11g PC card
  • Wireless 802.11g USB adapter
  • Power Line Adapter (Single-port)
  • Dual-port Power Line Adapter

The Westell Wireless 802.11g PC Card provides high-speed 54Mbps networking for mobile and laptop computers using the established IEEE 802.11g/b protocol. In addition, the adapter will provide up to 50% additional data throughput via standards based technology when connected to the Westell VersaLink(TM) Wireless Gateway. The adapter client software has been designed to ensure ease of use both for customers purchasing individual adapters as well as for customers installing the adapter in conjunction with new broadband service.

Like the PC Card adapter, the Westell Wireless 802.11g USB adapter provides 54 Mbps networking for desktop or notebook users who can also take advantage of easy-to-use configuration software. Both adapters interoperate with other standards compliant 802.11g and 802.11b wireless products.

Power line networking is an emerging standard that provides 14Mbps of data throughput across existing in-home electrical wiring without interference. Power line adapters simply plug into the AC power outlets in any room in the home and then use a standard Ethernet connection to connect laptops, desktops, network routers, and video game consoles.

Westell's dual-port Power Line Adapter provides two Ethernet ports allowing customers to connect the DSL router and a computer to a single wall plug. All of the Westell power line products are easy to setup, include 56-bit DES encryption for privacy, and employ error correction technology to ensure a quality customer experience. Each is compatible with the power line networking standard to ensure interoperability with other power line networking products.

The introduction of these adapters continues the active role Westell has taken in addressing the increasing demand by DSL consumers for home networking options as well as broadband applications and services. According to industry analyst Parks Associates, home networking is projected to grow from 12,000,000 to 30,000,000 homes over the next 5 years.

The new line of adapters are compatible with Westell's LiteLine(TM), ProLine(TM), UltraLine(TM) and VersaLink(TM) modems and gateways.

"With the average household now owning 2.5 computers, home networking is becoming more commonplace than ever before," said Scott Voegele, Product Line Director for Westell. "Having our own set of home networking adapters compliments our line of DSL modems and gateways and demonstrates Westell's intent to offer simplified home networking solutions for customers. It also allows our service provider partners to provide their broadband customers with a complete solution and the best possible installation experience," Voegele concluded.
