1. Product Description
This ADSL modem is a NAT router with a 10/100BaseT Ethernet port and a USB port. The Ethernet port is plug and play and does not require drivers. The USB port is compatible with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0. The USB drivers support Windows98se, Windows ME, Windows2000 and Windows XP. This router provides NAT functions with the option to configure firewall and port forwarding. In addition this device uses Westell’s Dynamic Multi-Hybrid (DMH) technology. DMH technology automatically tunes the modem for optimized performance.

2. Does ADSL require installing an additional phone line?
No. ADSL technology provides simultaneous analog voice or fax and DSL data transmission over the same telephone line.

3. How will ADSL affect my regular phone calls?
All the services that are currently available with your telephone service will work with ADSL.

4. Will my ADSL modem connect at the maximum speed available?
Yes. However, this speed is determined by the distance that you are from the Central Office and the condition of your telephone line. The further you are away then the less your ADSL speed will be. In addition your maximum speed is controlled by your Service Provider. Other conditions across the Internet may also affect your download speeds.

5. What is meant by an "always on" connection?
ADSL provides a dedicated connection between your computer and your Service Provider's data network. Because your ADSL connection does not interfere with your telephone, your DSL connection can be left "on" all the time.

6. What is a POTS splitter and do I need one?
A POTS splitter is a device that should be used when the DSL microfilters do not filter all the static, or noise, on the phone line. This can be installed easily where the phone line comes into the house; thus you do not need any further DSL microfilters.

7. I hear noise on my telephone whenever the modem is turned on. Is the modem faulty?
No. The modem is not faulty. This is a condition of ADSL that is handled by using microfilters. To solve this problem, connect a microfilter to your telephone. Every telephone attached to that line requires a microfilter.

8. Why won't my faxing software work with my ADSL modem?
You can not fax through the ADSL modem but you can still use your dialup modem to fax. This is because fax or voice is from 0 - 3.3Khz range and the ADSL bandwidth is typically 35kHz and above. Thus DSL and fax are not in the same bandwidth and do work together. This is why you can use them simultaneously, ADSL using high speed and fax using the dialup modem.

9. Where is the serial number located on the modem?
The number is located on the bottom of your modem below the bar code. It is an alphanumeric sequence of 12 characters and it is always preceded by the characters s/n.

10. Can I TELNET into the modem?
No. The modem does not support this application. It will pass TELNET requests through but it will not respond to them.

11. Sometimes there are error messages on my computer such as "Server Error" or "Connection Error 629." What does this mean?
The modem does not produce any error messages. These are coming from your DSL provider’s software and the DSL provider should be contacted about the problem.

12. What is a PVC and should they be changed?
A PVC or Permanent Virtual Circuit is a point to point dedicated circuit from you to your DSL service provider. PVC's are always on and should not be changed unless instructed to do so by your DSL service provider.

13. Does the Diagnostic Utility on the Westell CD need to be installed when using the modem?
No, the Westell Diagnostic Utility is an optional program you can install that places an icon in your system tray. This icon will let you know when you are connected to the Internet or when your connection goes down.

14. While trying to install the Westell Diagnostic Utility, I get an "Unable to communicate with modem" error, what does this mean?
To properly install the Diagnostic Utility, you need to make sure that the modem is connected directly to the computer. If you have a firewall installed make sure that it is disabled while doing the diagnostic installation.

15. The user guide for the modem is not in the box. Where is it located?
Run the setup.exe on the Westell CD then select the Westell User Guide from the menu. This is the user guide for the modem in .pdf format.

16. Is the modem compatible with any Ethernet Network Interface Card?
The modem is compatible with any network interface card that meets the requirements of IEEE 802.3. The Ethernet card can be 10BaseT, 100BaseT, or 10/100BaseT.

17. Will the modem operate with a 100BaseT device?
Yes. The modem is compatible with any Ethernet device that meets the requirements of IEEE 802.3. The Ethernet device can be 10BaseT, 100BaseT, or 10/100BaseT.

18. Will the modem work with any computer operating system?
If you use the Ethernet port the modem will work with any operating system. If you use the USB port you will need to install the USB drivers for this modem. The USB drivers are compatible with Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 and XP.

19. Can I share my ADSL connection?
Yes, by connecting the router to a hub or switch.

20. Do I need to install drivers to make the modem work?

With Windows98se, there is a certain procedure that must be followed in order for the USB drivers to be properly installed. If this process is not followed, then you must uninstall and reinstall the USB drivers in a particular order. Follow these instructions to complete the USB driver installation.

28. What does it mean when the USB light on the modem is not lit, but the modem is connected to the computer via the USB cable?
This means that the USB drivers for the modem are not loaded and should be checked under the System properties: Control Panel => System => Device Manager => Network Adapters => look for the Westell WireSpeed Dual Connect Modem.
If you are using Windows2000 or Windows XP then you would check by Control Panel => System => Hardware => Device Manager => Network Adapters => look for the Westell WireSpeed Dual Connect Modem.

29. What is the IP address of my router?
The default IP address for the LAN port of the router is 192.168.1.1. The WAN side IP address is assigned by your service provider. The WAN port IP address can be identified by viewing the Connection Summary page of the administrative home page in the router.

30. Does the Westell router have an Administrator password?
Yes, once the Westell router is setup you can protect the setup or restrict administrative access by enabling a password on it.
* From the homepage on the router go to the Maintenance menu and select Change Password.
* Enter a user name and password.

31. How do the other computers receive the IP addresses from this router?
The router automatically assigns the client computers that are connected to the hub an IP address. This is done as long as DHCP is enabled on the Ethernet card in the connected computer and in the router configuration.

32. What is port forwarding?
It forwards a service through the router to a computer on the LAN. This allow users outside your LAN to access specific computers on your internal network. Typically ports need to be opened for games or special applications such as VPN.

33. Can the ports be configured on this router?
Yes. The individual ports can be configured for specific services. (i.e. Telnet, FTP, gaming)

34. What traffic is allowed for each security level in the firewall?
The firewall controls outbound traffic initiated from within the local network.
The high security setting allows mail, news, web, ftp, and ipsec traffic but blocks all other types.
The medium security setting is the same as high security but it allows you to change the rules through port forwarding.
The low security setting allows all traffic except for known security holes.
The none security level turns off the firewall.

The number is located on the bottom of your modem below the bar code. It is an alphanumeric sequence of 12 characters and it is always preceded by the characters s/n.

10. Can I TELNET into the modem?
No. The modem does not support this application. It will pass TELNET requests through but it will not respond to them.

11. Sometimes there are error messages on my computer such as "Server Error" or "Connection Error 629." What does this mean?
The modem does not produce any error messages. These are coming from your DSL provider’s software and the DSL provider should be contacted about the problem.

12. What is a PVC and should they be changed?
A PVC or Permanent Virtual Circuit is a point to point dedicated circuit from you to your DSL service provider. PVC's are always on and should not be changed unless instructed to do so by your DSL service provider.

13. Does the Diagnostic Utility on the Westell CD need to be installed when using the modem?
No, the Westell Diagnostic Utility is an optional program you can install that places an icon in your system tray. This icon will let you know when you are connected to the Internet or when your connection goes down.

14. While trying to install the Westell Diagnostic Utility, I get an "Unable to communicate with modem" error, what does this mean?
To properly install the Diagnostic Utility, you need to make sure that the modem is connected directly to the computer. If you have a firewall installed make sure that it is disabled while doing the diagnostic installation.

15. The user guide for the modem is not in the box. Where is it located?
Run the setup.exe on the Westell CD then select the Westell User Guide from the menu. This is the user guide for the modem in .pdf format.

16. Is the modem compatible with any Ethernet Network Interface Card?
The modem is compatible with any network interface card that meets the requirements of IEEE 802.3. The Ethernet card can be 10BaseT, 100BaseT, or 10/100BaseT.

17. Will the modem operate with a 100BaseT device?
Yes. The modem is compatible with any Ethernet device that meets the requirements of IEEE 802.3. The Ethernet device can be 10BaseT, 100BaseT, or 10/100BaseT.

18. Will the modem work with any computer operating system?
If you use the Ethernet port the modem will work with any operating system. If you use the USB port you will need to install the USB drivers for this modem. The USB drivers are compatible with Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 and XP.

19. Can I share my ADSL connection?
Yes, by connecting the router to a hub or switch.

20. Do I need to install drivers to make the modem work?
If you use the Ethernet port the modem is a plug and play modem, it requires no special drivers to be installed to run. It operates off of the Network Interface Card installed in the PC. If you use the USB port you will need to install the USB drivers for this modem.

21. The DSL and Ethernet lights are always on, but I still cannot connect to the Internet. What is wrong?
The DSL light indicates that the connection from the modem to the Service Provider's central office is working. The Ethernet light indicates that the modem is detecting the Network Interface card in your PC. Your failure to connect to the Internet could be caused by one of the following:
- Your computer is configured incorrectly. This could be a result of improperly installed software.
- A failure in the Service Provider's network.

22. The DSL and USB lights are always on, but I still cannot connect to the Internet. What is wrong?
The DSL light indicates that the connection from the modem to the Service Provider's central office is working. The USB light indicates that the modem is detecting the USB port in your PC. Your failure to connect to the Internet could be caused by one of the following:

25. Do I need to install drivers for the modem to work with the USB connection?
Yes, refer to the user guide for installation instructions.

26. Is the Macintosh (MAC) operating system supported with the USB connection?
No, MAC systems can only be used with the Ethernet connection.

27. I have Windows98se and I'm having difficulty installing the USB drivers for the Westell modem. What could be going wrong with the installation?
With Windows98se, there is a certain procedure that must be followed in order for the USB drivers to be properly installed. If this process is not followed, then you must uninstall and reinstall the USB drivers in a particular order. Follow these instructions to complete the USB driver installation.

28. What does it mean when the USB light on the modem is not lit, but the modem is connected to the computer via the USB cable?
This means that the USB drivers for the modem are not loaded and should be checked under the System properties: Control Panel => System => Device Manager => Network Adapters => look for the Westell WireSpeed Dual Connect Modem.
If you are using Windows2000 or Windows XP then you would check by Control Panel => System => Hardware => Device Manager => Network Adapters => look for the Westell WireSpeed Dual Connect Modem.

29. What is the IP address of my router?
The default IP address for the LAN port of the router is 192.168.1.1. The WAN side IP address is assigned by your service provider. The WAN port IP address can be identified by viewing the Connection Summary page of the administrative home page in the router.

30. Does the Westell router have an Administrator password?
Yes, once the Westell router is setup you can protect the setup or restrict administrative access by enabling a password on it.
* From the homepage on the router go to the Maintenance menu and select Change Password.
* Enter a user name and password.

31. How do the other computers receive the IP addresses from this router?
The router automatically assigns the client computers that are connected to the hub an IP address. This is done as long as DHCP is enabled on the Ethernet card in the connected computer and in the router configuration.

32. What is port forwarding?
It forwards a service through the router to a computer on the LAN. This allow users outside your LAN to access specific computers on your internal network. Typically ports need to be opened for games or special applications such as VPN.

33. Can the ports be configured on this router?
Yes. The individual ports can be configured for specific services. (i.e. Telnet, FTP, gaming)

34. What traffic is allowed for each security level in the firewall?
The firewall controls outbound traffic initiated from within the local network.
The high security setting allows mail, news, web, ftp, and ipsec traffic but blocks all other types.
The medium security setting is the same as high security but it allows you to change the rules through port forwarding.
The low security setting allows all traffic except for known security holes.
The none security level turns off the firewall.
