AURORA, IL, JANUARY 21, 2004 -- Westell Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: WSTL), announced today that Alands Datakommmunikation AB (Alcom), of Finland the first ISP to provide ADSL2 speeds and Video-on-Demand services in Europe, has selected Westell Ltd.’s LiteLine 6100 DSL Router for deployment in 2004. Westell Ltd., located in Basingstoke, UK is a subsidiary of Westell Technologies.
Alcom supplies broadband Internet access and related services to residential and business customers on the Aland Islands, as well as to ISPs in neighboring regions. Being an early adopter of new technology, Alcom is already deploying Video on Demand services to its customers.
As a result of recent successful trials, Alcom selected Westell’s LiteLine 6100 DSL Router providing up to 11Mbps of bandwidth for immediate deployment. Upon initial deployment, Alcom will use Westell’s built-in S=1/2 capabilities to achieve ADSL2 speeds.
"Our initial trial of the ADSL2 capable technology and the Westell CPE was very successful. We found that we were able to offer significantly higher bandwidths, as well as a more reliable broadband service. We also saw improvements in speed and quality when testing at customers located in densely populated areas, and have increased the availability of broadband in those areas. Our experiences so far have allowed us to accelerate our plans to roll out ADSL2 throughout our network. We estimate that we will have all but a few of the nodes ADSL2-ready within a year," says Jan-Erik Eriksson, CTO of Alcom.
“We recognize this selection by Alcom, an innovative Scandinavian ISP, as yet another important milestone in verifying Westell’s commitment to broadband technology and products outside North America,” said Van Cullens, Westell President and CEO. “We are demonstrating that Westell can provide innovative companies with the technology they need to provide customers with new and improved broadband services,” Cullens said.
