Westell Adds MoCA Technology to Advanced Video Gateway

AURORA, IL, NOVEMBER 2, 2005 - -Westell Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: WSTL), a leading provider of broadband access products, gateways and conferencing services, today announces the addition of dual MoCA technology to its UltraLine™ II family of high-performance video gateways. The MoCA technology significantly improves the UltraLine II gateway’s delivery and distribution of broadband video and data over existing coaxial cables in Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) deployments.

The addition of a dual MoCA interface addresses an important issue for service providers: How to move broadband video and data from outside the home to the gateway device within the home?

Westell’s UltraLine II advanced video gateway solves the issue by simultaneously processing multiple streams of hi-definition and standard-definition video, broadband data, VoIP and gaming at speeds up to 100 Mbps, and routing the signals over existing coaxial cable to set top boxes and digital video recorders throughout the home.

The UltraLine II family of high-performance broadband routers was introduced earlier in 2005 in response to the marketplace’s needs for flexible WAN access technology. Three models were developed:

  1. UltraLine IIe – Ethernet WAN (for direct fiber connections)
  2. UltraLine IIb – Bonded ADSL WAN
  3. UltraLine IIv – VDSL2 WAN

All UltraLine II models contain an intelligent Ethernet switch as well as a high-performance 802.11g wireless access point to deliver wireless networking throughout the home.

“We are delighted to offer our service provider customers the ability to deliver revenue-driving video entertainment services without adding the complexity and expense of running new wires within the home,” said Gordon Reichard, Jr. Vice President of Marketing at Westell. “Adding the dual MoCA option to the multiple broadband WAN and LAN capabilities of our UltraLine II platform is simply another indicator of the flexibility offered by the product and our ability to respond to specific customer needs,” he added.

In addition to offering dual MoCA technology, the UltraLine II provides advanced software and routing capabilities critical to the reliable delivery of high-quality video content over the broadband network. The product line also supports intelligent IGMP functions for efficient delivery of video streams, as well as an innovative combination of Quality of Service (QoS) features and configurations. Westell will demonstrate the UltraLine II at the TelcoTV Conference and Expo, November 9th and 10th at the San Diego Convention Center.
