Westell Introduces the SPW Span Powering and Protection System

Provides lightning and power cross protection for multiplexers

AURORA, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Westell Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: WSTL)(“Westell”), a leading provider of broadband products, outside plant telecommunications equipment and conferencing services, today announced the release of its SPW2800 span powering and protection system. The SPW system is capable of providing power for 28 T1 network interface units with performance monitoring (NIU-PMs), while providing transient protection and overvoltage protection for the upstream multiplexer (MUX).

The SPW span powering system works with any manufacturer's MUX and is installed between the MUX and the T1 NIU-PM point of demarcation service hand-off to the customer. The SPW system is temperature hardened and provides span power to the remote T1 NIU-PMs while providing secondary lightning and power cross protection for the MUX.

“The key benefits of the SPW system are improvements in uptime and opex,” said Brian Powers, Senior Vice President of Westell’s OSPlant Systems Division. “Not only will it eliminate the need for local power at the T1 NIU, but it also will reduce service outages for telco operators by providing transient protection. An ideal application for the SPW system is in a cellular radio access network location where T1 transport circuits are used to backhaul cellular traffic to the central office.”

The 2RU-high SPW2800 system can be mounted in either 19” or 23” relay racks, in outdoor or indoor equipment cabinets, or on a wall with the provided mounting ears.
